| Online High School Classes can be a convenient way to either obtain a high school
diploma or finish a partial completed diploma. There are a variety of ways that online courses can be implemented. These range from
real-time classes where students and teachers are tele-conferenced together to courses taught by the computer. There are advantages and
disadvantages to each of these types of online high school classes.
Real-time classes where the students and teachers tele-conference together usually involve a specifically designed educational software
program. Here the teacher teaches using a combination of a web-cam and power-point presentation. In some cases he/she even has a
chalkboard time program where he/she can write or include additional material during the class. Students are included in the learning
experience by entering a chat room where they can interact with the teacher and other students. This type of learning experience has the
advantage of significant interaction with the teacher and the ability to ask questions easily and during the course of the class.
The disadvantage is that you have to work at the pace of the rest of the class and learning is structured with specific times, so your
learning experience is not as flexible.
At the other end of the spectrum are software driven courses. In this case your online high school classes are taught by the computer
and learning is very independent. You learn from text books (either physical or online) and a software driven learning program. Exams
and assignments are often completed completely online. A good course will allow you access to a teacher through email, phone or chat.
This means if you have questions or there is something you donŐt understand you can get help from a qualified teacher. The advantage of
this type of program is complete flexibility. You can work at your own pace, at times which are convenient for you. You can complete the
course as fast as you want or as slowly as you need to. The disadvantage is that this requires you to be self-motivated and study
independently.
In between these two modalities is a spectrum of learning experience incorporating some some aspects of each of these. When choosing a
school or online high school program you want to understand the learning modality they employ and how this will mesh with your learning
preferences.
